Did you know that rugs are regarded as the fifth wall? That’s why determining the right selection of rugs is as important as deciding the wall colors.
It seems easy-peezy to get confused in the wide range of rugs, isn’t it? Let’s now have a look at the guideline about the right dimensions, styles, and colors to add more volume to any living space.
How to select rugs for your living room?
Dimensions are really important when choosing a living room rug. Many living rooms are quite flexible when it comes to planning the design. We suggest you take a quick look at our living room design guideline.
If the room is spacious, you can choose 200x250 cm or 230x384 cm rugs. These rugs completely accommodate furniture and accessories on the floor.
If the living room is small, the rug should at least accommodate only the front legs of the sofas. This creates harmony. The coffee table plays an important role here, and to make sure you buy the right size coffee table, we suggest you read the coffee table guideline.
You can also match two or more rugs in the room, you just have to be careful that they are similar in shape, color, and patterns.
How to choose a rug for the dining room?
On contrary, the choice of rugs in the dining room is not very flexible. The important thing is that the table and chairs completely accommodate the rug. This means that at least 60 cm of free space should be left on all sides of the dining table so that chairs do not get off the edges of the rugs when pulled back.
If you haven't chosen a dining table yet, we suggest you get acquainted with our designers' list of stylish dining tables.
How to choose a rug for the bedroom?
Choosing a bedroom rug is more flexible. Many buy a rug that partially covers the bed, while others choose two small rugs for either side of the bed, where the feet reach first when getting out of bed.
230x304 cm rugs accommodate 1 king-size bed or two twin-size beds with their nightstands, benches, or shelves.
200x250 cm rugs will fit queen-size beds, and if they only cover half of the bed, leaving the nightstands on the floor.
150x230 cm rugs will accommodate twin beds without nightstands.
Of course, no rule forces the rug to be placed under the bed. If you don't want to cover your beautiful floor with a rug, you can choose two small rugs for either side of the bed. Since most of us like to be barefoot in the bedroom, it is also important to understand the rug structure, which you can read about here.
How to choose a rug for the hallway or entrance?
50x76 cm rugs are the most common for the hallway. In the corridor, the floor should be visible 10-12 cm from all sides of the rug. Here the rug must stand in the middle.
How to choose a rug for the kitchen?
If you want a color change or feel soft under your feet when washing dishes in the sink, we suggest choosing 7x12 or 10x15 cm rugs. The distance between the rug and the cabinet or wall should be 15-60 cm. In narrower kitchens, it is also convenient to use lengthy rugs that give visual volume.
Today, many rugs have a latex or cotton backing, which has protective properties. In the case of a cotton backing, you may need to lay an extra pad under the rug, but not in the case of latex, because it’s sticky. It is convenient to use rugs with cotton backing in the living rooms or bedrooms.
